JENNIFER VEREMIS, COMMUNITY ADVOCATE

“I believe deeply in the power of community and bringing people together. Strong communities benefit families and businesses."

In 2019 Jennifer was driving home from work and saw a Public Notice Zoning sign on the corner of Route 83 and St.Charles Road. The following day she called her Alderman.

Jennifer rallied her neighbors for a town hall meeting and learned everything they could about the process, past zoning cases and traffic reports. Shortly after, she Spearheaded Keep Elmhurst Vibrant and  organized over 200 neighbors and community support to successfully oppose a gas station development along Salt Creek at Route 83 and St. Charles Road. The group's work earned the 2019 Citizen Initiative Award from the Citizen Advocacy Center.  Most importantly, it proved people working together at the grassroots level can prevail and have positive outcomes.

Recently, Jennifer led the efforts with neighbors to get a park in their neighborhood, which is classified as a "park desert". After working with both staff and elected boards, an Intergovernmental Agreement was established. It is an outstanding example of collaboration.  The Elmhurst Park District has applied for a Federal Grant to cover the costs.

“We believed a gas station at the corner would threaten our environment, traffic, and public safety and negatively impact our community.

MILITARY ADVOCATE

“Serving our Veterans and active military is very close to my heart. Advocating for resources and awareness is part of my mission.”

Jennifer’s father was a Vietnam Veteran. He suddenly passed away in 2014. While cleaning out his home, Jennifer found the letters and journals he kept during his time in the service. They were heartbreaking to read. As with many veterans, his demons transferred to his family. Unfortunately, families often don’t know how deep the struggles are until someone passes. Jennifer is an advocate for mental health services partly because of personal experience.

Jennifer read and researched PTSD and decided to track down the men he served with in Vietnam. They invited her to their reunion and shared stories and pictures.

This memorable and moving experience encouraged Jennifer to volunteer for the USO of Illinois and American Legion.

  • Served at the center at O'Hare International Airport.
  • Assisted new Navy recruits and Great Lakes Navy grads.
  • Welcome home those returning from deployment.
  • Spearheaded the USO's participation in the Elmhurst Memorial Day Parade.
